the shortest ultra in Texas
Johnson Branch Trail Race
The race will be held at the Lake Ray Roberts - Johnson Branch Unit in Valley View, Texas on July 27, 2019. The Johnson Branch DORBA Trail at Ray Roberts Lake State Park is just 40 minutes north-east of Denton on beautiful Lake Ray Roberts. This wooded trail is a mix of fast, flat single track along with some challenging rocky sections that will keep you on your toes, and hopefully not on your face!
As with all of our trail races, this is a cupless event and runners will need to provide their own hydration system (handheld, hydration pack etc.). Aid stations will be stocked with a variety of sweet and salty snacks as well as Hammer Nutrition products for electrolytes and some gels.
26.5M 3 loops
13.1M 2 loops
5M 1 modified loop
Directions to the DORBA Trailhead
From Denton take I35 North. When you pass through Sanger don't take the FM455 exit that says "Lake Ray Roberts and State Park." Continue north past Sanger for about another 5 miles until you come to "Lone Oak Road, FM 3002, exit #483". Take FM3002 east 7 miles. You will cross over part of the lake, do not turn into the "Pecan Creek Access Area" which is on the east side of the bridge you will cross. After you cross the lake continue on until you arrive at the Ray Roberts Lake State Park - Johnson Branch Unit entrance on your right (south).
From Frisco take FM289 (Preston) north to Celina. In Celina take FM455 west to Pilot Point. From Pilot Point take Highway 377 north to Tioga. Just north of Tioga take FM922 west to Mountain Springs. In Mountain Springs head south on FM372. When the road splits take the right fork onto FM3002. Shortly after the split Johnson Branch will be on your left (south). Enter the park. Trailhead is at Dogwood Canyon which is the first campground you come to and is clearly marked. Once in the parking lot look for the little wooden kiosk in the north east corner of the parking lot to find the somewhat hidden entrance to the trail.
Our aid stations will have an assortment of sweet and salty items, Gatorade and water will be available for your hydration needs. There are three aid stations on the main loop and ultra and half runners will see all three.
If you run with music, please keep one ear open for safety and we ask that you do not run with a speaker. No one wants to hear “Don’t Stop Believing” a hundred times.
Packet pickup will run from 4-6 pm on July 26 at the Dogwood Camping Area in the park and will be available race day from 5:30-8:00.
